Great Grandma's (Modified) Barbecue Chicken Marinade


This recipe reminds me of summer.  It has been a family go to recipe for any large picnic or barbecue or small family gathering. We modified it years ago to accommodate the sensitivities and allergies amongst us and whether the gathering is old, young, or a mix everyone is happy with the flavors of this.

The use of poultry seasoning really makes this chicken sing.  My spice cabinet currently has four, yes, FOUR, containers of poultry seasoning because we find ourselves making this recipe on vacation, camping trips, or when visiting friends.  For whatever reason, I never think to pack it.

The original recipe calls for split chicken breasts, remember it is an old recipe and my grandparents and great grandparents were farmers, with chickens. They did not use boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Still, the recipe will work for any cut of chicken, but without the bone the marinating time should be reduced.  This is still best with the split breasts, but for convenience (and my bone averse daughter) we often use the boneless, skinless breasts. Ah, how times have changed.  I wonder if we all lived the way our grandparents and great grandparents did, would we have all these allergies and sensitivities?

Great Grandma's (Modified) Barbecue Chicken Marinade


Gluten Free
Corn Free
Allergen Free for: Dairy, Egg, Soy, Nut, Peanut, Wheat, Shellfish, Fish

Contains Vinegar

1/2 cup water
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1-2 Tbsp. salt
1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning

1 pound split chicken breasts

Mix all ingredients.  Pour over chicken in a baking dish or a ziplock bag. Let marinate at least 30 minutes for boneless skinless breasts, Marinate at least 2 hours up to 24 hours for split chicken breasts or half chickens. 

Notes: 1. I do mix this up and pour it over the raw chicken in a ziplock and then freeze the entire bag. It makes for a quick and easy meal when pulled from the freezer.

2. The chicken will begin to turn white when it has soaked long enough
